At-Risk in Primary Care: Adolescents

Introduction

The physical and mental well being of our patients are often very closely connected. And adolescence is a time in life when many people begin to show signs of mental disorders. Two in ten 9- to 17-year-olds have a mental disorder that causes at least mild functional impairment, with almost 1 in 10 experiencing severe impairment. And, although rare, suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth aged 10 to 24. Early detection of mental health concerns can have a powerful impact over the patient’s lifetime.

Primary care providers are in an ideal position to educate young people about mental health and promote positive changes in behavior and attitudes. More providers than ever are now screening patients for mental health concerns, which makes it easier to know which patients may be at-risk so they can follow up with them during their appointment. But even if a patient does not screen positive or if your office does not provide mental health screening, you should still be alert to signs of mental health concerns during every appointment.
