Friend 2 Friend: Resiliency and Growth

Welcome to the screen reader for Friend 2 Friend: Resiliency and Growth. Friend 2 Friend: Resiliency and Growth is a learning program in which students learn to help each other navigate responses to academic challenges and setbacks in a positive way. Learning through realistic example conversations and Recognize, Reassess and Retry strategies, students help each other examine their thoughts and reactions and then build toward positive, realistic perspectives about themselves, their goals and growth through challenges.

Pic 0: A 15-year-old Asian student with short brown hair stands behind a lectern at the front of a science classroom. He is wearing a blue and gray hoodie.

Dan is giving a presentation in his science class.

Dan brushes aside a bead of sweat from his forehead. He's not nervous. Why would he be nervous?

Dan thought: I got this. It's just mitosis. It's just a presentation. It'll be okay. I wrote down every word on my notecards, so I won't forget anything.

Dan: Mitosis is the process of one cell splitting itself into two identical cells. Each new cell gets an equal set of chromosomes. The first phase is called prophase, in which the nucleolis disappears. (Notecards shuffling). Telephase is the last phase, uh, whoops, sorry. So, in conclusion (notecards shuffling). Wait, no, um.

Dan thought: Oh, crud, these are all out of order! I'll ask if I can present tomorrow instead. And I'll double-check that the cards are in the right order.

Dan: Actually can I? (cough) Sorry (cough), I just need (cough) hold on (large throat-clearing cough). Sorry about that.

Dan thought: I'll make a self-deprecating joke about it and move on.

Dan: I’d start from the beginning, but no one wants to steer me fart over anyway.

(Kids laugh)

Dan: I mean, hear me start over, wait, that's not what I! (holding back tears) Sorry, I, (kids laugh).

Dan thought: This is the worst day of my life.

Dan had an unfortunate presentation where he had a coughing fit, then cried, and is taking a moment to collect his thoughts. He's going to talk with his friend Ruby about what happened. He's going to try to remember to use the three Rs to Recognize his feelings, Reassess his self-talk, and Retry by making a plan for the future. We'll watch two different versions of this conversation as Dan expresses himself in different ways.
