Emotional & Mental Wellness

Overview

Welcome to the screenreader for Emotional & Mental Wellness. This simulation is designed to help you gain knowledge, skill, and self confidence to effectively identify and communicate with your children about their wellbeing, build resilience, and learn about when and where to look for additional resources and support.

Talk

Pic 0: The words “Is this your first time stopping by, or have you been here before” appear with the choices ‘It’s my first time.’ and ‘I’ve been here before.’

Chooses ‘It’s my first time.’

Pic 1: The words fade away and the screen is replaced by a woman sitting outside of a café.

HOPE: Well, it's nice to meet you! My name's Hope.

Pic 2: An image of a small figure with the words “Build Resiliency” under it appears next to Hope.

HOPE: I'm here to talk about some ways you can help build resiliency with your children.

I’m a proud parent of two children. I want the best for my kids, as we all do! But I don’t always know the best way to help them. In fact, recently, both my kids have had their struggles.

Pic 3: The image changes to one of Hope sitting and talking with another man at the café. The label “Experienced parent and mental health professional” appears next to the man.

HOPE: I ended up going to a friend of mine, an experienced parent who’s also a mental health professional, and we chatted a little about the concept of resiliency, particularly as it relates to children.

Pic 4: A banner appears that says “Resiliency: Tips and techniques” appears underneath Hope.

HOPE: We talked through a bunch of tips and techniques that can help build resiliency. They really helped my kids, and I’m hoping some of them might be helpful to you for yours!

Pic 5:  The screen returns to Hope alone at the café. A circle with the Resiliency icon pops up with an arrow that leads to the word “Summary” with an icon of a written list.

HOPE: I hope during our conversation you find the answers to any questions on building resiliency you may have. At the end of our chat, I'll give you a summary of everything we talked about today. And even after we finish, feel free to come back from time to time and talk about anything you missed or want a refresher on.

So how does this all sound?

Player chooses the response option “It sounds pretty good, so far.”

HOPE: I’m glad to hear that! Then let’s keep going.

Pic 6: The image changes to a blue screen with the word “Resiliency” and its icon. The words “Cope with Adversity” appear underneath.

HOPE: So, what do we even mean when we say resiliency? First off, Resiliency can mean different things to different people, but for our chat today, we'll be talking about resiliency as a set of skills and characteristics that help children cope with adversity. It’s this idea ofbouncing back when things don't go as planned.

Pic 7: An image of a figure on a bicycle appears underneath the text.

HOPE: Getting back on that bike after falling off? That's resiliency!

Pic 8:  The figure on the bicycle falls to the ground, with icons indicating frustration surrounding them.

HOPE: As is talking to your kid about them getting back on their bike after they fall off.

Why is this important? Resiliency is a valuable set of skills and strategies for children and adults to work on.

Pic 9: The image of the figure and the bicycle disappear and the words “Better able to adapt to changing circumstances” appear underneath the banner.

HOPE: For us, it means we’re better able to adapt to changing circumstances

Pic 10: An arrow leads from the text to an image of a book with the word “Academically” next to it.

HOPE: For our kids it may lead to them doing better academically; your child’s ability to develop resiliency skills can even be a predictor of their success at school.

Pic 11: The words “Struggle and overcome challenges” replace the other text under the banner along with an image of a figure climbing a mountain. The text is then replaced by a checkmark next to the words “Overcome challenges.”

HOPE: We all have some level of resiliency! We've all felt what it's like to struggle and overcome challenges at some point. It's a skill that we can cultivate over time, and we can talk about ways to keep developing skills and strategies that help us overcome challenges.
